Discovered in 2019 after years of searching, the St. Mary’s fort is an ongoing archaeological site. Originally built in 1634, St. Mary’s Fort represents the first major foothold of European settlement in Maryland. In the same field, there is also evidence of archaeological sites representing 8,000 years of continuous Native presence. These two important sites offer the opportunity to reflect on the nature of historical colonialism in Maryland and its continuing effects in today’s world.
