Historic St. Mary’s City
Celebrate spring and the beginning of a new season at HSMC! Free admission for the day, with all activities and demonstrations included.
Activities to include:
10:30 a.m. / 2:00 p.m. Changing Landscapes
Receive a guided tour of the site where both Native occupation and the St. Mary’s Fort have been documented. Gain an understanding of how these two groups interacted with each other from the 1600s up to today.
Space is limited; sign up when you purchase your museum admission.
10:30 a.m. Spring Storytime
Join us at the waterfront for an enjoyable storytime session! Tailored for children aged 5 to 8, the spring storytime will feature the book “Old Wood Boat,” read with our own “old wood boat,” Maryland Dove, in sight!
11:00 a.m. Hearth Cooking
Join our Hearth Cooking demonstration and learn how to prepare delicious meals without the modern conveniences of a refrigerator, stove, or microwave! Explore the differences between bachelor cooking at the Tenant House and the culinary practices of the Main House family and their servants. Understand how class and resources shaped the way meals were prepared over 300 years ago.
12:00 p.m. Clothing
Explore the construction techniques and materials (including innovative ideas) that may have been employed by the Woodland Indians to craft clothing from animals.
12:30 p.m. “The Trial of the Unlawful Dog”
Hear ye! Hear ye! County Court will be in session with this rowdy re-enactment of a case centered around an unlawful dog.
1:00 p.m. The Piscataway Indian Nation Singers and Dancers
Engage with the Piscataway Indian Nation Singers and Dancers as they perform, teach, and celebrate the vibrant living traditions of the Piscataway through their music and dance.
2:00 p.m. Spring Storytime (for children ages 5 to 8)
Join storytime at the Margaret Brent Gazebo for a delightful reading of “Happy Springtime!” Come and enjoy a fun story and a spring day!
2:30 p.m. Printing Press Demonstration
Gather at the print house to witness a moveable type printing press in action and discover the stories of three incredible Maryland women who utilized this machine to alter the course of history.
3:45 Gunnery Demonstration
Learn how and why the crew of Maryland Dove use the ship’s cannons. Please note that this program will conclude with a loud noise, so those with sound sensitivities should take caution.
