Joe was born on Long Island, NY but moved to St. Mary’s county in 1969. He became a carpenter shortly after graduating from Ryken High school in 1983 and worked for various companies until meeting John O’Rourke and Gus Kiorpes who hired him on to work at Cross Manor. It was there that Joe really learned the art of Historic Restoration with their expert guidance.
This led to a long relationship with Ted and Grace Ann Koppel working at their properties, which in turn led Mr. Kangas to work at many other historic sites and institutions throughout southern Maryland. He opened up his own company in 1997 and expanded out, eventually hiring employees and widening the scope of the business to include all aspects of home improvement
As the Director of Facilities and Grounds at Historic St. Mary’s City, Joe Kangas is responsible for the entire 830 acres, all 100+ buildings, including all roads, trails, shoreline, infrastructure, and the Maryland Dove. One of the best parts about the job is the wide range of challenges faced every day and the problem solving that is required to solve them with the Facilities and Grounds team.
