Workshops
Colonial Medicine— Ages 6 & up
10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation
In this workshop, students will explore the garden and learn about herbs and their medicinal uses in the 17 th century. Through discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on opportunities, participants will gain an understanding of the herbalists of the time and their methods for preparing herbals for curing a variety of illnesses.
Do these cures and medicinal beliefs hold up today or are they all outdated snippets of nonsense?

Maryland Dove and waterfront
This program is designed provide students with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the crew dynamics aboard a 17th century merchant ship.
Participants of this workshop will have a specialized tour of the Maryland Dove and will focus the work, tasks and tools associated with specific crew positions. Through discussion and hands-on activities, students will learn about the jobs and tools that allowed ship crews to work cohesively and efficiently. Following the ship tour, students’ understanding of shipboard positions and tools will be tested with an interactive memory game.
Uncovering The Mysteries of History—Ages 9 & up
1:00-2:20 p.m.
Town Center
This program will provide students with an overview of Archaeology and its importance at St. Mary’s City. Through discussions and hands-on educational activities, participants of this workshop will gain an understanding of the methods that archaeologists and historians use to uncover new information about the past. This workshop also includes a visit to the St. Mary’s Fort archaeological site.
Woodland Games— 6 & up
1:00-2:20 p.m.
Woodland Indian Hamlet
Games have been an important part of Native American culture used to bring people together and strengthen community values. Many games also played a role in the education of children by helping them to develop skills that were necessary to be successful adults. Participants of this workshop will join the Hamlet staff as they explore the variations of woodland games played throughout time and still played today. This workshop includes interpretive discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
